Security Guard Services – Is There an Alternative?

When I was younger I encountered a number of thefts whilst working a large electronics store in Peterborough, based in the Midlands of the U.K. The retail store manager at the time came under scrutiny for not having security measures in place. I can see from a management perspective how having security services on-board would be more costly, but for the cost of stolen goods, it would be cost effective surely. Obviously these days, we are very aware when we enter a big department store that there is CCTV monitoring our every move, yet even private bodyguard in London with this security measure in places crimes are still being committed.

It is a shame that crime is still being committed, yet it becomes alarming that the cost of all the damages and items taken amounts in the retail sector alone, amounts to just over £4.88billion in the U.K. alone. An incredible statistic when you come to think about it. Obviously, not all of the crimes were committed in CCTV monitored stores but it is a striking statistic which should cause concern for many retail outlets. It is all very well saying that businesses should invest in security services, with security guard services being the service in review, yet there are businesses which cannot afford the extra add-ons of having peace of mind with security. Store layout is a factor which could deter criminals, as if the expensive and luxury items are in view of store clerks then it would take some nerve to steal goods within the clerk’s eyesight. The exit route could have many obstacles with basic CCTV recording the faces of those that leave the store. The fore-mentioned ‘obstacles’ could be display features that cover floor spaces yet also double up a marketing aid for the other shoppers.

The objective is to prevent crime by making it as hard as possible for a shopper to consider theft as an option with security guard services. Some clothing stores have introduced security tags on each size of a particular item which has its benefits along with its negatives. The benefit is obviously to reduce the possibility of a crime; however, a drawback of this is that a customer will have to ask the shop assistant for permission to try on an item of clothing. This could eliminate those the buy an item on impulse making purchases, and some shoppers are too shy to ask for help.

All in all, there are ways to prevent crime, yet if a criminal is really hard-up then they will find a way and run the risk of being caught. The important thing for a business to remember is that is worth considering professional security services to secure themselves in the long run. Even if there is theft within the store, the retail outlet will have coverage for the police to utilise and will help them with insurances. Security guard services would be beneficial for stores that sell high involvement purchase such clothing, electronics and perfumes. Yet, if you are not sure how to go about it, then maybe consider laying out the store in a different manner.
